ABOUT
Alvin J. Berger P.E., principal of AJB Engineering Consultants, LLC has over 40 years experience in providing consulting and design services in Ohio and throughout the Mid-West. Berger holds Professional Engineering licenses in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois and Tennessee. Berger also maintains his NCEES.
Berger obtained his BS Electrical Engineering from The Ohio State University in 1978. He is a Certified Construction Claims Specialist and has served on the Ohio Public Works Advisory Committee that resulted in the Public Works Ohio Construction Reform Law, HB 153 in 2011. He also wrote the Power for Technology grant program that resulted in numerous Ohio schools updating their electrical distribution systems to handle the original influx of computers.
Prior to founding AJB Engineering Consultants, LLC in 2015, Berger served as President and CEO of a major Architectural-Engineering-Planning firm in central Ohio. Here, Berger managed the engineering implementation on a variety of projects including facility studies, energy conservation improvements, adaptive revitalization analysis/implementations, as well as the design of new facilities, additions and renovations. His responsibilities included preliminary reviews and evaluation of project engineering requirements, identifying, evaluating and validating project needs while establishing budgets and the project approach. Berger also worked with clients through project construction, system energization and budget control. He lead the firm's efforts in alternative energy, including solar and wind systems for a number of clients.
AJB Engineering Consultants, LLC was established to continue to provide thorough yet cost-effective engineering design while providing experienced consulting and construction related services to clients.
Since the State of Ohio has accepted Design Build as an approved implementation method for public projects, there is a need by the public entity to utilize the consulting services of a Criteria Engineer. AJB Engineering has successfully served in this role for 7 projects to date, assisting the client in establishing the project scope of work and in the selection of the Design Build contractor to implement the project.

EFFECTIVE UTILITY SERVICES
Effective Utility Services saves its clients money for reducing the cost of the distribution portion of their electric bill. The distribution portion of an electric bill is approximately 50% of the total cost. EUS does this by making modifications required to place the client in the most optimal electrical rate tariff and if necessary by modifying the on-site distribution network to benefit from the tariff change. EUS has also developed a proprietary financing approach which does not require a capital investment by the client. The EUS approach does nothing to reduce electrical consumption nor does it affect the generation portion of the electrical bill which the client may be under contract with or without a consortium.
As a partner in Effective Utility Services (EUS), Berger currently serves as the Chief Design Engineer for EUS.
DESIGN BUILD
Design Build Process in Ohio
Ohio requires every public owner that wishes to use Design-Build for their projects to engage a criteria architect or criteria engineer. This entity assists the public owner in identifying the nature of the project and establishing the owner's performance goals by preparing design criteria to be provided to those design-build firms interested in this project. AJB Engineering Consultants LLC has been the Criteria Engineer for various projects listed above.
